The movie doesn’t break any grounds in terms of art or sound direction. It has beautiful imagery from time to time, but what breaks the mold is the story. That is what I’m going to focus next.
There are plot holes, and some less believable events, but overall it is a great tale. A human tale, focused upon human flaws and the perseverance and courage to overcome them. It has some great subtle moments, like throwing guilt around.
About Will Smith and Jaden Smith performances, I won’t say they’re the best I have ever seen, but they are by no means bad. Will Smith portrays perfectly what he aims to, and Jaden tries his best. I don’t believe it is his fault that his performance comes off less than stellar. I can see that he tried his best, but his face, and possibly himself, aren’t very expressive. Through different moments there is little in his features to distinguish if he is happy, sad, scared, because the change in his expression is so subtle, that becomes hard to recognize.
So if you like a moving story, don’t hear the bad reviews and give the movie a shot! If you like substance, you’ll probably like it.

You just watched a thoroughly enjoyable and expertly directed film. You want to check out what other people think of it. You go to Rottentomatoes, IMDb or Metacritic to read some reviews… and you realize that you are alone. So very, very alone. You know the feeling? I do, after watching the perversely underrated After Earth.
I am not saying this film is as brilliant as the earliest films of Shyamalan. What I am saying is that I thought it was the best popcorn-flick to come out of Hollywood this year. Brilliantly directed, beautifully if uncharacteristically paced, well acted (Will was great, Jaden was passable), intimate and elegant. That is what I think of After Earth.
M Night Shyamalan is one of the best things Hollywood has to offer, I stand by that. Not because I am a fan-boy. But because time and time again his movies (with some exceptions) put me under their spell. I’m not even that big on Hollywood movies. I love Haneke, Dumont, Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu, etc… you know: art-house stuff. Once in a while though, I like to just watch some brainless entertainment. More often than not, I am shocked by the mindnumbingness of most of those movies. I’ve almost never had a bad experience with M. Nights films though.
Let’s recap:
– The Sixth Sense (A masterpiece in the ghost story genre).
– Unbreakable (Tarantino called it a masterpiece in one of his favorite movies lists. I agree with him).
– Signs (An enjoyable and highly original variant on the invasion genre. I love you Nostalghia Critic, but I do not agree with your hilarious review)
– The Village (according to me, this is his 3rd masterpiece. Original, atmospheric, moving).
– Lady in the water (A more than average fantasy flick. Highly original).

– The Happening (Everybody hated it. I didn’t, even though I felt Mark Wahlberg was miscast. There was something indefinably eerie about the wind blowing in those treetops).
– The Last Airbender (oh well… nobody’s perfect)

– After Earth (It’s just my opinion, but I thought it was better than Oblivion, Iron Man 3, Man Of steel, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Pacific Rim. And I liked all of those movies!).
I would give this movie an 8 out of 10 if the reviews weren’t so absurdly malicious. I’ll crank it up to 10 out of 10 to help out the average score.
